Contacting Tim Rutherford - Head Psychologist

We work with Tim in the D&AD project last year, I was impressed with the role he played and was interested in working with him again. He looks similar to Des Barron a London based actor who applied for the part as the Head Psychologist, the only problem with this is paying actors to travel from London to Leeds and back will become incredibly expensive, especially as our budget is practically none existent. It makes sense to source local actors where possible especially when we know they are good for the part. I spoke to Tim earlier by phone informing of this part, he seemed rather interested, requesting further information regarding the part and the production. This is what I sent him via email;

Hi Tim

Thanks for your time and your interest in our production, like I was saying it is only a small part we are looking for and the production is a 2.30-3.00 minute short film in the style of a movie trailer so we really won't be needing you for that long. The only lines that we need you to read are;

"You and I both know not to take on board what every crackpot comes in here shouting and screaming about."

"That's enough, I don't want to hear another word on the matter, or I'll have you sectioned as well."

The characters profile is relatively simple, in a nutshell;

The part we would like you to play is a Senior Psychologist that is uncompromising when one of his colleagues suggests that the visions one of her patients is receiving from an alien race of humanoid beings is related to the strange turn of events that begin to unfold throughout the film.

Here's a basic treatment of the production idea;

Originally the Anunnaki are seen to be the antagonists, however as it comes to light that the world is enslaved to a race of shapeshifting reptilians which seek to destroy all humanoid beings, it becomes clear that the Anunnaki are both our creators and our saviours. A thought provoking drama with low-key CGI, inspired by the outlandish ideas of David Icke's work, the story subliminally confronts many thoughts and questions raised by modern society.

How to hold an audition - ehow

1. Step 1

   First, post your audition schedule. Depending on the type of audition, you can hire casting people to advertise your auditions, you can ask select people to audition or you can post a general notice, either with posters or online.

2. Step 2

   Film each new audition if you're casting a movie. You'll need lighting, a camera, a camera operator and a casting person to run the audition. You may also want to have a "reader," an actor who reads opposite the auditioning person. For film, use a cold reading or give the actor sides to prepare ahead of time.

3. Step 3

   Allow actors to prepare monologues for new auditions for a play. You'll need an audition space and a stage manager to run the audition process.

4. Step 4

   Arrange to have both singing and dancing rooms available for a musical audition. In addition to the director, you also need a musical director, a choreographer, and a stage manager to run the auditions. For a musical, have the actors prepare a song, and learn the dance onsite.

This exercise has been useful in terms of developing an understanding of what exactly it is I'm trying to portray in my trailer/short film.

However, it isn't another Sixth Sense - it's not as good, for a start - but it has much going for it, moving the supernatural genre to a thought-provoking and surreal new level. After becoming the sole survivor of a train crash, security guard Willis is told by brittle-boned comic-art gallery owner Samuel L Jackson that he has special powers. What's more, Jackson believes that comic books are the only way this ancient heroic history has been kept alive for contemporary mass consumption. Willis dismisses Jackson's theories as lunatic ramblings, but details from his life gradually force him to have second thoughts - could he really be a New Age avenger that weaker members of society need? More rambling than Sixth Sense, Unbreakable is still an enthralling and subtle fantasy. Shyamalan is a master storyteller whose supreme self-confidence enables him to push the viewer through assorted hoops. Shot using comic-strip camera angles that only hint at the climactic twist, Shyamalan breaks the mould in terms of mounting a semi-pretentious concept with complete assurance, combining genre language with clever sleight-of-hand to broach seriously oddball issues.

Fire Serpent Trailer

Fire Serpent is a 2007 Sci-Fi Channel film, written by William Shatner, a solar flare from the sun sends a serpentine alien of fire to Earth, where it begins to wreak havoc among a small community in its search for more fuel, in the form of a large military oil reserve.

I caught the end of this film the other night on Zone Horror, I was taken by the "tacky" CGI effect they've gone for, this is most likely due to the budget the Sci-Fi Channel has. Another reason for keeping CGI to a minimal for our trailer is evident from analyzing the Fire Serpent. This trailer does the opposite of selling the film due to the cheap looking visual effects used in it.

This man has applied for the role of head psychologist, in my opinion he suits the role very well with his stern yet knowledgeable look. The showreel he sent is decent enough, shows the difference in the roles he has played in the past. My favorites being the Judge and the prison guard. He is based in surrey but willing to travel, we will have to see what the cost would be and asses the viability.

Teaser Trailer Analysis - I Am Legend

Trailers

The purpose of trailers is to sell the film to the public so that they will want to pay to see it at the cinema.

A trailer is like a free sample of a film. When you are making a trailer you have to be a good salesman by showing the strengths of the film and hiding the weaknesses.

A trailer needs a beginning, a middle and an end and it should set up the story and the world of the film in the most exciting, interesting or intriguing way it can. This can be done in different ways, for example you can tease the story to make the audience want to find out more...

What ingredients do you need to make a trailer?

A trailer is made up of some or all of the following: clips from the film, voice over, caption cards, music and sound effects.

Clips from the film should show the film off in the best way to help sell it. It is not just about showing 'the best bits' but selecting shots and dialogue that tell an exciting story.

Voice over or captions cards are not essential but they can be really useful. They should be used to help set up and move on the story you want to tell. They should be clear and concise and not too long.

Music and sound effects are the backbone of any trailer. They set the pace and rhythm of the trailer and drive it through from beginning to end. Choosing the right music can make or break a trailer.

Summer blockbusters are said to be made of fast cuts creating a sense of speed and excitement.

Alice in Wonderland Trailer Analysis

"There is a place... Like no place on Earth, some say, to survive it, you need to be as mad as hatter, which luckily... I am" Cue the close up scene, taken from where alice arrives at the mad hatters table. This is the introduction, six short scenes lasting no more than 3 seconds which gives the slightest of insights into what occurs in these scenes.

This is interesting because I was taught in the sales job I did over the summer that on average people only have an attention span of 2-3 seconds, if it's not of interest they switch of, going into autopilot mode.

By switching to a different scene this quickly the attention span problem is actually being utilised rather than seen as problem, this is evident in this trailer as contrasting scenes are carefully selected to appeal to a wider audience.

Obviously an entire two minutes of 2-3 second cuts would become rather monotonous, so once the interest has been sparked, it is now time to explain the entire film in less just around two minutes.

Once the narrator has introduced the film in less than a quarter of minute it is up to the film to sell itself. The next 15 seconds or so is taken up by the first focal point of the film, the return of alice, this visually represented by 15 cuts to different camera angles to keep the audiences interest, the audio is dialogue from the scene support by mood enhancing music.

After a quick scene which announces the director comes the second focal point, the red queen has taken over wonderland. Essentially this part edited in a similar way, visually anyway, these fast cuts from scene to scene keeping the viewer interested. In this part of the trailer the red queens agenda is revealed as she seeks to remove alice from wonderland. These shots tend to show the red queen looking angry and alice looking scared, this makes the audience aware that the red queen is the antagonist and alice is the protagonist. The momentum of the music has also increased making the footage seem more frantic than earlier.

This next scene announces when the film is released before showing of the most important scenes, what I am guessing to be is the final battle. The rest of the trailer is taken up by short exciting clips from the most entertaining scenes, accompanied by fast dramatic music to emphasise the quick cut shots.

Tron 2 (Tr2n) Trailer Analysis

This is the trailer for the new Tron 2010 film, this trailer is dark and really gets the adrenaline glands pumping which to me suggests its marketed as a summer blockbuster. This trailer is a single scene rather than an assortment of clips, this suggests its intended to ensue interest and a feeling of wanting to know why this happened.

Having watched the original film this scene would make me want to go see it due to how the effects look as though they suit the film and it looks darker than the original which has become somewhat of a trend with recent remakes. This leads me to make an interesting conclusion that the general cinema audience on a whole are much more willing to watch films which are eviler and darker due to how these now capture there sense of imagination.

This trailer shows enough of the story so you can get the general idea, something which was once a game has gone wrong and turned bad, its set in a digital world and the man in white is clearly involved. This being the big time movie star Jeff Bridges, as in other hollywood films he is showcased in the trailer which will draw some viewers in. In our production i don't think this will be applicable some how.......

Instead of using lots of clips this trailer uses more shot cuts which are quick fast inferring a quick paced film which is exciting. The sound is intense and is mainly futuristic sound effects for the vehicle's with some dialogue. At the end it switches to a sinister musical score which is modern and includes techno vibes its fast rhythm gets the adrenaline pumping again. It then stops when the character is about to speak. This score is 'matrix' like it has a similar feel, but this is of similar genre so it suits well.

It uses the tag line "This is just a game!!" "..........Not any more", telling more about the plot and how what it is about.

Essentially the trailer we are creating is for an apocalypse style moving, I thought it would be useful to look at it's meaning to demonstrate how I have worked biblical reference to the root of the film. In an nutshell it's a conspiracists recipe for putting explanation to the impending revelation.

For this i think me and Haydn have slightly different ideas, i like the cinematic style shown in this video from men in black, after the chase the actor looks back and his eyes use there third and forth left right lids. The thing which really makes it is the sound noise of the squelch, really gives it a cringe worthy feeling.

Research - Third Eye Lid
